Rachel made the drive into town in something of a haze. She paid the necessary attention to her driving, but her mind
was elsewhere. She parked the car in the lot of the town’s one small supermarket and automatically started for the
entrance without any clear idea of exactly what she intended to buy.
Going into town for groceries had been a temporary and short-lived escape. That was all. She didn’t dare try to
disappear this soon. All of Chance’s hunting instincts would be aroused, and he would do as he threatened; he would
follow her. Rachel had enough respect for his professional abilities to believe he would find her. He had convinced her
of that.
She was so preoccupied wondering exactly how and when to plan her permanent escape from Snowball’s Chance
that she didn’t see Keith Braxton until she collided with him at the entrance to the supermarket. One glance told her
that his pleasant-faced veneer had been stripped away. She was seeing the side of him she’d only had a hint of the
day she’d had lunch with him.
„Just the little housekeeper I’ve been wanting to see,“ Keith said with cool anticipation as he reached out to steady
her. „I’ve been waiting for you.“
Rachel looked up at him in startled confusion. „Waiting for me?“
„Yeah. You’ve been coming into town almost every day. I figured you’d probably come in today. I kept an eye on
the turnoff to Snowball’s Chance this morning and, sure enough, here you are. I followed you all the way into town,
and you didn’t even notice me in your rearview mirror. What’s the matter, Rachel? Got too many other things on your
mind these days?“
„Such as?“ she snapped, thoroughly annoyed with him for turning into a pest. As if she didn’t have enough
problems at the moment.
„Such as your sister, Gail Vaughan,“ Keith said smoothly.
The shock went straight to the core. Rachel could hardly breathe. „How do you know about Gail?“
„The day we had lunch I went through your purse while you used the ladies’ room,“ Keith said carelessly.
„My purse! How dare you?“ Then she remembered the glass of water he’d spilled that day and realized it hadn’t
been an accident. „You’re a bastard, Keith, but I suppose you already know that.“
He paid no attention to her furious protest. „I found a few names and addresses that, being the earnest,
hardworking journalist that I am, I ran down without too much difficulty. When I hit Gail Vaughan, I hit pay dirt. The
old phone number you had for her was at Truett & Tully. When I called I was told she didn’t work there any longer. A
little more digging turned up the fact that she’d been asked to resign because of the results of an investigation carried
out by an agent of Dixon Security. It didn’t take any great intuitive leap to figure out that Abraham Chance was that
agent.“ Keith smiled thinly. „Which left me with some very interesting questions about your presence at Snowball’s
Chance.“
Rachel clutched the strap of her shoulder bag and gave him a scathing look. „Go ask your questions somewhere
else.
